"Alxa" is a Mongolian language, which means "a colorful place". Alxa League is located in the west of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is connected with Wuhai, Bayannur and Ordos in the east and northeast, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the south and southeast, Gansu Province in the west and southwest, and Mongolia State in the north. The border is 735 kilometers long.

Alxa has a long history. As early as the Paleolithic Age, there were human activities here. Huo Qubing, a famous general of the Western Han Dynasty, entered Juyan to recover Hexi. In the Yuan Dynasty, Yijinailu Chief Executive Office was set up. During the reign of Kangxi, Weilat Heshuote Tribe migrated from Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang to Alxa Grassland, and Turhute Tribe returned from Volga River to Ejin River basin. In the Qing Dynasty, there were two special banners, Alxa Heshuote Banner and Ejina Old Turhute Banner. In 1949, Alxa Heshuote Banner and Ejin Turhute Banner were peacefully liberated. The Alxa League was established in May 1980. 

The " Alxa like heaven " is vast and magical. The world's only desert-themed geological park, Ejin Populus euphratica forest, one of the world's three largest populus forests, and Dongfeng Space City (Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center), one of the world's three largest manned space centers, are located here. The Juyan Bamboo Slips unearthed in Ejin are known as one of the four major archaeological discoveries in China in the 20th century, and the Mandela Mountain rock paintings and Helan Mountain rock paintings are known as "living fossils in the art world". The three major cultures of Moxi Weilat Mongolia, Mobei Karka Mongolia and Monan Mongolia are integrated and developed here. Desert culture, grassland culture, camel culture, aerospace culture and stone appreciation culture complement each other. Alxa enjoys the reputation of China's Stone City, the Hometown of Camels, and the Hometown of Cistanche. It is also the permanent host of the world's largest off-road event, the Alxa Heroes' Meeting.
