Chifeng

Chifeng, formerly known as Zhaowuda League, is a prefecture level city under Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is located in the southeast of Inner Mongolia, at the intersection of Inner Mongolia, Hebei and Liaoning. It borders Chaoyang in the southeast, Chengde in the southwest, Tongliao in the east, and Xilingol League in the northwest. Chifeng is located in the inland, belonging to temperate semi-arid continental monsoon climate zone. The city covers a total area of 90021 square kilometers, with 3 districts, 7 banners and 2 counties under its jurisdiction. Chifeng City is a National Health City, a National Forest City, a National Garden City, an Excellent Tourist City in China, a National Advanced City for Sand Prevention and Control, and a national model city for mutual support of army and local government.

Chifeng means red mountain, being named after the ochre red mountain peak in the northeast of the city. Chifeng is also known as the "hometown of jade dragons" due to the discovery of the "national treasure" of Hongshan Culture. Chifeng was once the political, economic and cultural center of Liao Dynasty. Its two major cities, Liaoshangjing and Liaozhongjing, were located in Bairin Left Banner and Ningcheng County respectively. Hongshan Cultural Sites and Liao Cultural Sites have been included in the preparatory list of China's world cultural heritage.
